The Start
For my “Big Birthday”, I chose to go to South Africa for a two week motorcycle tour. For Dan’s “Big Birthday”, he chose Morocco. We were excited about the trip, even though we had a rough start before we even left town: Dan had injured some ribs during our Easter break ride, and I had a surprise root canal just days before we were to depart. But now it was time to go!
Loki is checking if there’s room for him
In the end, Loki did not fit
The flight was uneventful and the scenery was beautiful. Spain is always interesting, even from above. But even though I’d been there a couple of times before, I’d like to explore more of it.
Our little airport; leaving Basel behind
We arrived at our hotel, the Malaga City Suites, and met with our friends who were staying at the same place. We had arranged months ago to take this trip together and now it was finally happening!
The interior of the hotel was dated, but nice. The marble steps gave a sense of historic elegance and I wondered about the history of the building. The staff was more than enthusiastic and friendly and made us feel very welcome.
The view from our room was less-than-impressive (and it smelled bad, too)
After we had dropped off our bags and changed into more suitable clothes, the four of us started to stroll around the neighborhood, catching up as we took in the sights.
I love how they kept the facade
We walked to La Fabrica for lunch (which was incredibly good). Afterwards we strolled along the waterfront; it was warm and people were enjoying the sun and the sand. We’d all been to Malaga before, so this was more about catching up with old friends than seeing the town.
Biggest drill I’ve ever seen!
We had all of Saturday to continue wandering and chatting, and spent most of our time walking along the sea. It was another beautiful day, cool in the morning but with a growing warmth as the sun climbed in the sky.
The old bull fighting ring, now catering to less violent shows
We walked along the beach to the next town, Paseo Maritimo El Pedregal, where we had an excellent lunch at La Mensula Taberna Marinera.
Lunch! Many tasty tapas were shared
Many restaurants had these “boat grills” set up on the beachside of the boardwalk to supply their customers
Walking back along the boardwalk
Our pre-holiday holiday was coming to an end. Tomorrow we’d take a taxi to the start of the motorcycle tour!
